The Chanate Historic Cemetery Needs Your Support

Here are some ways in which you can help.

[Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.]

1. Call, write, or email the members of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

Tell them that you appreciate their support of the Chanate Historic Cemetery. The Chanate Historic Cemetery is in the Third Supervisorial District under Supervisor Shirlee Zane. Contact information for the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors may be found here.

Spring Clean

Spring Clean is a community effort involving many individuals and organizations working together for a positive change. The Chanate Historic Cemetery is one of the projects chosen for this year's effort, which will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. To participate in Spring Clean, visit Spring Clean or email Ed Buonaccorsi or call 707-543-3710.

United Way "Day of Caring"

United Way's 19th Annual Day of Caring will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. This year marks the seventh year in a row that United Way volunteers have worked at the Chanate Historic Cemetery. To get involved, work through your employer or check out the United Way web site Day of Caring.

4. Make a financial contribution.

[First of four every-name plaques.]

Most of the graves in the Chanate Historic Cemetery are unidentified -- the names are known but not which grave they are in. Instead of individual grave markers, a set of four bronze plaques will contain all 1,306 known names. One plaque has already been purchased and most of the money for number two is in a trust account set up by the Sonoma County Historical Society. Each plaque costs $2,500 so an additional $5,000 is needed. Your contribution will help us reach our goal of buying the set of plaques and installing them at the entrance to the cemetery.

A contribution form can be found here. Print the form and send it in with your check to:
Chanate Cemetery Fund, Sonoma County Historical Society, P.O. Box 1373, Santa Rosa, CA 95402.

You may also make a contribution using PayPal.

5. Please consider including the Chanate Historic Cemetery in your estate plans.

With your help, the future care of the Chanate Historic Cemetery will be assured for many years to come.

6. Sponsor a bench or picnic table.

Through the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation, you can place a memorial plaque on the bench at the entrance to the cemetery or you can sponsor a picnic table with a memorial plaque to further improve the usefulness of the cemetery. For more information, go to the Foundation's web site here.

7. Purchase a grave marker for a loved one in the Chanate Historic Cemetery.

[Marker for John Buzzini.] [Marker for Jasper Hitchcock.] [Marker for Walter McCoy.] [Marker for Lenni Willman.] [Marker for Walter Wilson.]

One-third of the graves in the cemetery have been identified by name. If one of these was a friend, relative, or simply a special person whom you would like to honor, you may buy a bronze plaque with their name and dates and have it installed at their grave. Plaques (cast bronze, 6 by 8 inches) are currently $205 with free installation compliments of Sonoma County Regional Parks volunteers. Five Chanate graves have been so honored by family members with the markers shown above. If you wish to sponsor a marker, print a copy of the contribution form here, add a note with the name of the person you wish to honor, and send it in with your check for $205. We'll do the rest, and remember, your contribution is tax-deductable. If you have any questions, please send an email to Cemeterian.
